Key Finder

“Have you got the keys?”

Looking for the drug keys was costing Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust valuable nursing time every day as nurses looked for the drug keys, walking round the ward hunting and searching, repeatedly interrupting their colleagues, creating unnecessary noise and motion, often resorting to calling out "have you got the keys?"

The solution is simple in design and functionality, and overcomes this long standing problem. By working in conjunction with NHS Innovations and Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust, Multitone has developed a Key Finder so that nurses can locate the keys promptly.

Patient Safety and Patient Experience

Hunting for drug keys means potential delays for those patients receiving medication or treatment. The Key Finder takes seconds to locate the keys, allowing nurses to reinvest their time preparing medicines, improving patient safety by reducing the risk of drug errors and ultimately improving patient experience.

The Key Finder Fob is attached to the drug keys and when activated by a nurse who needs the keys, the Key Finder Fob vibrates and alarms, alerting the nurse with the keys that they are needed. The Key Finder also has the option of a night-time mode to reduce noise at night.

Additional Benefits

In addition, the Key Finder Fob also vibrates and alarms if removed from the clinical area, reducing further delays for patients and frustrations to staff when valuable minutes or even hours are lost if a member of staff has left the department with the keys.

The Key Finder is also designed to be ward specific, to ensure that adjacent ward areas using a Key Finder can do so without cross-interference.

Turning an idea into a reality

Key Finder was created by Sally Gray, Paediatric Practice Educator, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, by identifying a solution to this long term problem which improves both patient safety and patient experience.
