The growing role of AI in transforming global patient care
AI is already integral in global healthcare systems, in many areas such as the analysis of medical images, the prediction of patient risk, the identification of patterns in vast datasets leading to earlier diagnoses and more personalised treatments. The acceleration of AI in healthcare is fast; it is being integrated into robotic surgical platforms to automate certain tasks such as suturing and tissue dissection, and virtual nursing assistants are already advanced in using not only AI, but also natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning, to interact with patients through voice or text.
In the UK healthcare arena
The UK is particularly active in integrating AI across its healthcare system, with AI algorithms being used in diagnostics, clinical decision making, administrative efficiency and public health and research. The NHS AI Lab is dedicated to accelerating the safe and ethical adoption of artificial intelligence in health and care, aiming to improve patient outcomes and efficiency within the National Health Service. For example, £113 million has been awarded so far to accelerate the testing and evaluation of technologies most likely to meet the aims set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.
AI in critical communications in healthcare
